Top Things to do at Legoland in the Rain

by Macca

Discover the best things to do at Legoland Windsor in the rain – from indoor rides to play zones, top tips and ways to keep the fun going whatever the weather.

I’m not too sure if we’re reaching the realms of “wettest September on record” yet, but it has rained on and off for the past seven days making it a particularly wet end to the summer.

Chloe and I thought we picked the perfect time to visit Legoland. It was mid-week and the day after all the kids had gone back to school. We thought we’d have the park to ourselves. Perfect, right? The one thing we didn’t factor in was the ol British weather. The forecast was so bad for the day we were supposed to go we even considered cancelling our trip.

Thankfully, the weather wasn’t anywhere near as bad as we were expecting, but it did still train at points throughout the day. Luckily, we were very well prepared with rain jackets and umbrellas!

As a nation obsessed by the weather, I wanted to write this guide all about the best things to do at Legoland in the rain. This means you can be prepared to maximise your time and enjoyment at Legoland even if it is bucketing it down. And don’t worry, you’ll still have an amazing time if the heavens open up – we know we did!

If you’re planning a trip to Legoland, make sure you check out our guide to which is packed full of insider tips and information on how to maximise your day in the park.

What are the best rides in the rain?

Luckily we were very prepared for the rain!

I think there are two types of people when it comes to rain – those who embrace getting soaked, and those who jump from puddle to puddle in fear of every rain drop.

If you’re the former, then you’re good to go. I don’t think the rain will put you off your day. If anything, you’ll probably enjoy rides like Pirate Falls Treasure Quest and Hydra’s Challenge even more knowing you’re going to get wet anyway. In for a penny, in for a pound, right?

If you’d prefer to be under cover when it rains, then a lot of the outdoor rollercoasters like The Dragon and Minifigure Speedway automatically rule themselves out. Thankfully, there are loads of rides and activities that are indoors. Here’s what I would suggest you do on a rainy day at Legoland.

Flight of the Sky Lion

Flight of the Sky Lion is a must

This is hands down the star of Legoland and, luckily for us, it’s completely indoors. Flight of the Sky Lion is the UK’s first flying theatre ride, and it’s roarsome. You’re strapped into a motion seat that soars you through mythical Lego worlds, complete with wind, mist and smells to really bring the adventure to life.

Because it’s inside, the rain doesn’t make the slightest bit of difference – if anything, it feels like you’ve escaped to somewhere sunnier. It’s also one of the longer rides in the park, so you’ll get a good break from the drizzle too. Even on a quiet day, this ride took me 25 minutes, so it’s one of the longer rides at Legoland.

Deep Sea Adventure

This was my favourite ride at Legoland

I absolutely loved Deep Sea Adventure. It was my favourite ride at Legoland, and it’s perfect for the little ones too. This submarine ride takes you “underwater” to explore an ocean full of real fish, sharks and rays mixed in with Lego models.

It’s slow-paced, indoors, and despite going underwater, completely dry – the perfect antidote to a soggy day outside. This fish and sharks get surprisingly close to the submarines, and it really does feel like you’re underwater in the deep blue. There are a few fish tanks and exhibits as you’re leaving which our son really enjoyed too. All in all, Deep Sea Adventure is a massive win when it’s raining.

Haunted House Monster Party

Haunted House Monster Party is another indoor ride

This one is such a laugh. You head inside Lord Vampyre’s mansion for what starts out as a spooky disco, before the whole room flips upside down in a dizzying illusion. It’s silly, it’s fun, and most importantly it’s all indoors.

The ride itself is only a few minutes long, but the theming in the queue and the immersive pre-show make it feel like a proper attraction. On a rainy day, you’ll be very glad to step inside somewhere warm and dry for this one.

Laser Raiders

Laser Raiders is an old school themepark ride

Laser Raiders is another great rainy-day escape. It’s an interactive dark ride where you travel through an Egyptian tomb shooting lasers at targets to rack up points. Think ghost train meets arcade game. The whole thing is undercover and a lot of fun if you’re even the tiniest bit competitive. My score was 140,000 with close to developing RSI from squeezing the trigger so much. I was shocked when I saw the top score of the day was 400,000! I have no idea how anyone did that.

It’s also one of those rides where you’ll want to go again and again to beat your score, so it’s a perfect way to while away some time if the weather isn’t on your side.

Ninjago

This ride will have you ninja chopping your way

Ninjago is a 4D interactive ride where you use hand gestures (no need for laser guns here) to fling fireballs, ice and lightning at enemies. It feels a bit like being inside a video game, which is probably why it’s always such a hit. I found it a little repetitive, but I know kids love this ride as it feels like they’re killing lots of badies.

Best of all, it’s entirely indoors – the queue, the ride and the pre-show. You’ll get a good 15-20 minutes under cover here, which is ideal if the heavens have really opened.

Legoland Express

Okay, this one is technically outdoors, but it’s worth including because it’s a great way to see the park while still staying relatively dry. The train carriages are covered, so you’re protected from most of the rain while trundling around Legoland at a leisurely pace. On a wet day it’s quite nice to sit back, stay sheltered, and watch everyone else dashing about with umbrellas. If you’ve got train-mad kids like we do, then the Legoland Express is a must regardless of the weather.

Ferrari Build & Race Experience

This is one of the newest additions to Legoland and a brilliant indoor activity for when it’s wet. It’s part showcase, part interactive play zone, all themed around Ferrari. Kids can design cars, test them on interactive tracks and even get a photo in a life-size Lego Ferrari. It’s bright, colourful, and all under one roof, so you can easily spend a chunk of time here without worrying about the weather.

Bricktopia

Bricktopia is basically Lego heaven indoors. It’s a huge play space where kids can get hands-on building everything from racing cars to towers and test them out. There’s plenty of seating too, so it’s a good spot for parents to take a breather while the little ones go wild with bricks. On a rainy day, it’s a fantastic way to escape the showers and let the kids burn off some energy.

4D Cinema

If the rain is unrelenting, the 4D cinema is a total lifesaver. There are a few different Lego-themed films on rotation, and they’re surprisingly fun even for adults. The “4D” part means you’ll get blasts of wind, sprays of water and other effects, but don’t worry – you’ll still be much drier than if you were outside. The films only last around 15 minutes each, but it’s a good escape for a bit. Our son really enjoyed the alien invasion film.

Top tips for visiting Legoland in the rain

  • Bring the right gear – Obvious but essential. Waterproof jackets, umbrellas and maybe even a poncho or two will make all the difference. The park is very open, so you’ll appreciate staying dry as you move between rides. You can buy Legoland ponchos inside the park, but as they are £6 it’s best to bring your own.
  • Do the outdoor rides early – If the forecast says the rain is coming later, get the outdoor coasters like The Dragon or Mia’s Riding Adventure ticked off first. That way you can retreat indoors once the weather turns.
  • Save indoor rides for downpours – Attractions like Flight of the Sky Lion, Ninjago and the 4D Cinema are perfect to slot in when the heavens really open. It means you can carry on having fun instead of queuing outside getting soggy.
  • Use the covered queues – A lot of the bigger rides have indoor or partially covered queue lines, which is a blessing on a wet day. Even if it’s busy, you’re at least sheltered while you wait.
  • Plan food stops cleverly – If the rain looks relentless, it’s a good time to head for lunch. Most of the restaurants are indoors and give you a good 45 minutes to dry off, recharge and wait out a shower.
  • Bring a spare layer for the kids – Even if you’ve packed waterproofs, little ones have a habit of getting drenched somehow. Having a change of clothes (or at least socks) can be a day-saver. I would suggest bringing spare shoes too – our son’s were drenched when we took them off, so we popped him in some wellies instead.
  • Embrace it – At the end of the day, Legoland is just as much fun in the rain if you lean into it. Some rides are designed to get you wet anyway, and there’s something quite funny about riding Pirate Falls in a downpour – you can’t get much wetter than that!

Final thoughts

So, there you have it – proof that a bit of rain doesn’t need to ruin your day at Legoland. With so many indoor rides, play zones and shows, you can still pack in loads of fun even if the skies open up.

In fact, sometimes the wet weather can work in your favour – the park often feels quieter and the queues shorter, so you get more time on the rides you love. As long as you go prepared with waterproofs, a bit of patience and a sense of humour, you’ll still come away with that big Legoland grin.

Buying tickets for Legoland

I’d recommend buying your Legoland tickets beforehand

One of the easiest ways to save money on your trip is by booking tickets online in advance. Not only is it usually cheaper than buying at the gate on the day, but you’ll also skip the long ticket queues and head straight into the park. The earlier you book, the more you tend to save, so it’s definitely worth planning ahead.

Tickets are only £34 if you book ahead, so it’s well worth doing.
